Vera Wang, Figure Skating and the Olympics

How, you may ask, could Vera Wang, goddess of bridal gowns, have in common with ice skating and the Olympics? Did you know Vera Wang has been inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame?

I've always loved ice skating, like a could watch it all day long, kind of love. While the only sports I could do that are in the Winter Olympics would be snowboarding and skiing (ok not really but a girl can dream, I can go down a hill standing up on both), figure skating would be my first choice. When I think of the Olympics, I think of figure skating, much to the dismay of my husband who thinks of boardercross and the halfpipe.  I'm sure if you asked anyone what sport they think of when they think of the Olympics, they'll say figure skating. It may be just because it receives so much extra press and seems to be the one sport that everyone talks about or is aware of. Think about it, up until the Americans medaled in the Nordic Combined, did you even know it existed? Nope, but you knew about figure skating.

Anyhow, last night was the men's short program competition. I watched all of it. Stayed up past my bedtime and watched it to the end. I'm obsessed. I love the costumes, the theatricalness (not a word, I know) and the drama....that may be because the infamous Harding-Kerrigan incident took place right as I was starting to become aware of the importance of the Olympics but I digress.

Last night Evan Lysacek was one to watch. When he took the ice I was in awe of his costume, the feathers on his hands, the criss-crossed fabric and that deep black accented his performance perfectly. I loved it...then today while perusing facebook Vera Wang posted a link to this on MSNBC about the designs of the figure skating costumes. Who knew. Turns out this amazing woman not only creates fashion forward bridal gowns, but also aspired to be a competitive figure skater, missing out on a chance at a national competition in 1968. How fitting that she now designs a few of their costumes. She has designed for Michelle Kwan and Nancy Kerrigan but I think my favorite is Evan's costume from last night:

As I was googling away for some images, my autofill prompted me to search for "Evan Lysacek girlfriend" "Evan Lysacek gay costume", "Evan Lysacek Edward Featherhands" and "Evan Lysacek is gay" Made me giggle a little.  And in case you were wondering, he's not gay, his ex-girlfriends is one of ESPN's hottest female athletes, Tanith Belbin, also a skater who also happens to be competing and rooming with Evan's close competition Johnny Weir. How's that for a weird love triangle?

Personal Shopper, on Etsy? Brilliant!

Mel, a fabulous woman inside and out, in real life and online, has started a new blog featuring etsy.com finds. I've posted a few things about etsy on this blog here and here. I've purchased a few things, including the chandelier piece earrings I wore in our wedding, and have been thrilled with everything.

If you've ever tried to navigate through the hundreds of thousands of amazing listings on etsy, you'll appreciate Mel's blog. She explores the handmade world and posts her finds making it much easier for the non-searching types to find exactly what they're looking for. The pictures are there with a link to the seller's shop, how easy could it be. You can take Mel's advice on style too, she's a pretty fashionable lady!

Add it to your reader, become a follower....you may find yourself just as big an etsy addict as I am, and well, that could be dangerous.

Here's a little preview of today's post, who doesn't need a fabulous bag? Follow her here.

Pink, Orange & Navy

I met with a potential client on Saturday morning, she's using a fabulous, very unique color scheme. I'm excited to potentially put together some designs using these colors. They're great for summer and are so unique and fresh!

Snuggly Engagement Shoot with Jillian & Ed

If you're anything like me, you secretly love to watch the Bachelor and Bachelorette but don't necessarily let others know. It's a guilty pleasure, the drama, the extravagant, wouldn't ever happen in real life, dates and the cattiness of the contestants rots my brain on Monday nights.

My favorite couple thus far has to be Jillian and Ed. They're engaged and on the road to what I'm sure will be a fabulous wedding with Jillian's designer background and natural style. I came across their engagement pictures today at Wedded Bliss Photography. Not only are they great pictures but they seem to tell a story. Here are a few of my favorites, take a look at a few more over at Wedded Bliss Photography.

Bridal Fashion on the Red Carpet

It's awards season! I can't think of anything better to do on a Sunday night than to curl up on the couch with a glass of wine to watch high fashion come down the red carpet.

Fashion trends are always changing but in the last few years there has been a definite bridal-esque presence on the red carpets. It's easy to look at a couture dress and picture it in white for a bridal gown but lately we've seen bridal gowns go the other way, from wedding land to high fashion. At the Golden Globes, Felicity Huffman wore a gorgeous Jenny Packham gown, she may have messed up her lines, but she was stunning in this coral gown. Kate Hudson was a vision in white in her Marchesa gown at the Golden Globes. This one was straight out of the new bridal line. Now that I think about it Kate also wore a daring backless white gown to the SAG Awards, maybe white is the new black?

Speaking of the SAG Awards, the always adorable Drew Barrymore, was bold in her blue Monique Lhuillier gown. I've seen this dress a few times, once in Platinum Weddings, but never in blue. Honestly I've never been a fan of the second stiff "skirt". Take it off and that dress would be flawless. I will say Miss Barrymore's makeup and hair were fabulous! Another straight out of the boutique gown was the Vera Wang that Kyra Sedgwick wore. The dress fit like a glove and the sheer grey sash accentuates her curves. Beautiful.

Can't wait for the Oscars!

Coral...or sherbert, or orange

However you say it, a pale orange pairs well with most shades of blue. This modern take on blue and orange doesn't seem to "Bronco" like and has a fun, lighthearted feel to it. These colors would be great for a summer garden wedding.

All of the inspiration below can be found on etsy.com one of my very favorite sites for weddings. It can take a little patience and time to find the right thing but there are some gems to be found.

More Turquoise...

Another great way to use turquoise...pair it with green. Apple green, olive green, forest green, they all work. Use lots of different shades instead of just two. The 90's two toned weddings are gone, layer those colors up!

Hitched in the Highlands

Oh, I love, love, love when businesses work together! I also love the Highlands and all of the cute shops and businesses over there. I'm not involved in this but it is truly too good of a deal to not share.

A few wedding related businesses, look at all of them down there, in the Highlands are holding an urban scavenger hunt of the sorts and the prize is $20,000 worth in wedding goodies! Head over to HappyCakesDenver.com or visit their adorable shop and have a cupcake while you fill out the application. All applications are due by Friday, Febrary 12.

Good Luck!

Color Trends

I'm obsessed with color. When I graduated from college I applied to be a color forcaster for Nike, in college one of my favorite classes was color theory and my thesis (major research to graduate, they don't call it a thesis in art school) was written on color in industry. I love colors. I used to sort my box of 96 Crayolas (yep I was lucky enough to not have to settle for just 24) into color ranges with each tone moving right into the next, my crayons looked like a beautiful paint swatch.

Where do the hot, new colors come from? Who gets to decide what will be the next black? Well generally we see color trends set from fashion. Fashion Week in New York and Paris set the tone for colors. Have you noticed that the first time you see some of the colors used in Fashion Week you think the designers are a little crazy. Some of the trends that come back are crazy, why oh why are we reliving the 80's? Isn't that an era that never needed to come back?

Looking at this year's Spring 2010 Fashion Color Report from Pantone, the worlds leading color authority, the new "it" colors for this spring are bright with a few muted neutrals. Turquoise is already all the rage so their forcast, first published in fall of 2009 seems to be spot on.

In an effort to blog more on weddings but to keep a somewhat different subject matter than every other wedding related blog I want to delve into colors for the next few weeks. How can one color translate to several different palattes? How does color covey mood, how can colors be used in a timeless way and how to incorporate colors into your wedding planning.

My first posts will be on the first color in the Pantone report, turquoise. Turquoise ranges from the bright, bold turquoise of a peacock feather to the light aqua tones you see in the sky. It is a color that has an endless range and can be paired with numerous other colors to create moody and light hearted events.

Paired with deep jewel tones, it can feel warm and moody and creates a dramatic backdrop for any event. An event with jewel tones would be great for a late fall or winter wedding. The colors are lush and extravagent and have a majestic feel.  Take a look at how turquoise can be paired with dramatic tones to create a royal, elegant and rich feeling event.

I lost all of the photo credits in a fight with my computer but if you really want to know where the pictures came from email me at lauren@itsquintessential.com.
