This, the Summer of Purple

I'm not sure what it is but for some reason it seems as though the color of the year is purple, plum or magenta. I've got a few weddings lined up with shades of purple and while each uses the hue of royalty, each wedding is unique in its own right.

It was a soggy day for Joe and Alicia but neither of them seemed to mind. For June, this wedding felt like it was March, I showed up with the flowers wearing a scarf, long sleeves and jeans if that tells you anything about the temps that day. Alicia and Joe were troopers, pulling out the umbrellas and moving the ceremony inside The Inn at Hudson Gardens. It may have been a downpour outside but the weather didn't dampen anyone's spirits and the cozy Inn with two roaring fireplaces kept the guests warm and dry.

The very talented Rene Tate shared these awesome photos of their beautiful day.

The gorgeous girls!

The Stylin' Groom

Love this picture, the color of the sky intesifies the colors of the dresses and the flower in Alicia's hair, just perfect!

A Spring Green Wedding

I had my first "green" wedding last weekend. The bride requested locally grown flowers for her bouquets. This presented a challenge in that May in Colorado doesn't really offer the best selection in locally grown flowers and second, the weather in Colorado isn't really bulk flower growing weather.

Lucky for us, Colorado, Denver specifically has a wholesaler that not only sells locally grown flowers, they grow them too. Stevens and Sons has been operating in Denver since 1966. They manage a 100,000 sq foot greenhouse in Arvada and are the region's largest producer of Oriental and Asiatic lilies. They also grow seasonal flowers which were ideal for my May bride's bouquets.

Because growing flowers is a risky business and one never knows when or how they'll bloom, choosing specific locally grown flowers is a gamble. It is easist to set your heart on certain colors rather than flowers just in case they don't bloom or aren't available.

For last weekend's wedding I used locally grown snapdragons, hydrangea, freesia, asters and sustainable grown gerbera daisies, wax flower, stock and tulips. All were fresh, green and smelled wonderful.  If you're interested in a "green" wedding contact me and I'll help you choose the best options for your wedding flowers.

Snuggly Engagement Shoot with Jillian & Ed

If you're anything like me, you secretly love to watch the Bachelor and Bachelorette but don't necessarily let others know. It's a guilty pleasure, the drama, the extravagant, wouldn't ever happen in real life, dates and the cattiness of the contestants rots my brain on Monday nights.

My favorite couple thus far has to be Jillian and Ed. They're engaged and on the road to what I'm sure will be a fabulous wedding with Jillian's designer background and natural style. I came across their engagement pictures today at Wedded Bliss Photography. Not only are they great pictures but they seem to tell a story. Here are a few of my favorites, take a look at a few more over at Wedded Bliss Photography.

Coral...or sherbert, or orange

However you say it, a pale orange pairs well with most shades of blue. This modern take on blue and orange doesn't seem to "Bronco" like and has a fun, lighthearted feel to it. These colors would be great for a summer garden wedding.

All of the inspiration below can be found on etsy.com one of my very favorite sites for weddings. It can take a little patience and time to find the right thing but there are some gems to be found.

Color Trends

I'm obsessed with color. When I graduated from college I applied to be a color forcaster for Nike, in college one of my favorite classes was color theory and my thesis (major research to graduate, they don't call it a thesis in art school) was written on color in industry. I love colors. I used to sort my box of 96 Crayolas (yep I was lucky enough to not have to settle for just 24) into color ranges with each tone moving right into the next, my crayons looked like a beautiful paint swatch.

Where do the hot, new colors come from? Who gets to decide what will be the next black? Well generally we see color trends set from fashion. Fashion Week in New York and Paris set the tone for colors. Have you noticed that the first time you see some of the colors used in Fashion Week you think the designers are a little crazy. Some of the trends that come back are crazy, why oh why are we reliving the 80's? Isn't that an era that never needed to come back?

Looking at this year's Spring 2010 Fashion Color Report from Pantone, the worlds leading color authority, the new "it" colors for this spring are bright with a few muted neutrals. Turquoise is already all the rage so their forcast, first published in fall of 2009 seems to be spot on.

In an effort to blog more on weddings but to keep a somewhat different subject matter than every other wedding related blog I want to delve into colors for the next few weeks. How can one color translate to several different palattes? How does color covey mood, how can colors be used in a timeless way and how to incorporate colors into your wedding planning.

My first posts will be on the first color in the Pantone report, turquoise. Turquoise ranges from the bright, bold turquoise of a peacock feather to the light aqua tones you see in the sky. It is a color that has an endless range and can be paired with numerous other colors to create moody and light hearted events.

Paired with deep jewel tones, it can feel warm and moody and creates a dramatic backdrop for any event. An event with jewel tones would be great for a late fall or winter wedding. The colors are lush and extravagent and have a majestic feel.  Take a look at how turquoise can be paired with dramatic tones to create a royal, elegant and rich feeling event.

I lost all of the photo credits in a fight with my computer but if you really want to know where the pictures came from email me at lauren@itsquintessential.com.

Shivering

It's cold, as in really cold in Denver tonight. The snow is moving in and there is a definite chill in the air (and in our apartment). Hopefully tomorrow there will be a layer of bright white snow on the ground and the otherwise bland looking trees will come to life with the snowflakes.

Not many people choose to get married in the winter, typically November through February is the slowest time in wedding world. I'm not sure why, especially in Colorado, vendors are often willing to give better deals and you can definitely get more for your money. Find the right scenery and winter is downright gorgeous. There are several palates to work with as the days get shorter and colder. White is classic and lends itself to lots of candlelight creating a cozy atmosphere. Blue and silver can come together to create a winter wonderland full of sparkle. My favorite color for a winter wedding, well it's white and as natural as you can get. The pictures below look cold but feel cozy and inviting at the same time.

Maybe it's the snow and the fact that I'm just a ski bum at heart but there is something so romantic about snow resting on a branch.

Stay warm out there and enjoy the flakes ;)

Step Aside for What is Larger

I adore A Practical Bride's blog. She posted a link a few days back to a guest blogger on a San Francisco photographer's website that just sums up all things wedding. When planning a wedding most of the advice you will receive will all be practical and when you think deeply about a wedding, it is the most unpractical event out there. Read more here and just look at the emotion in these pictures you can feel it through the monitor.

Read on into the blog, Anna Kuperberg is one talented woman!
